WISC Walking Group: Eastern Walkway ππ€
The WISC walker hiked the Eastern Walkway starting from Tarakena Bay (after Moa Pt). The weather was great and there were 10 of us that started on a short steep climb to Ataturk Memorial. The Memorial is NZ and Turkiye's commemoration of the site at Anzac Cove in Gallipoli. Soil from Anzac Cove is buried here to honour Turkiyeβs war dead.
From the Memorial we had spectacular views of the eastern coast, the many beaches and bays, Cook Strait and all the way to the Kaikoura ranges in the South Island. From here it was flat and then a steady gentle uphill through bush and then along the ridge with more spectacular views of the coast and Cook Strait. Of course, we had to stop to admire the views at various vantage points and to hydrate ourselves and for some chit chat - this time it was about the best dark chocolate and icecream!!
The track took us downhill again and then a steady gently uphill climb toward Pass of Branda and then downhill through some pine groves. We even spotted the most beautiful orange/red mushroom. We then reached the coast again and stopped for lunch on the rocks on the coast at Breaker Bay, admiring the Eastbourne shores opposite and reminiscing about the group's bike ride that some of us had done a few weeks ago and the rest listening with envy.
After lunch a discussion and debrief about our upcoming group dinner that all are looking forward to eagerly and some sub-delegations being done (how to find times for high & low tide) for the next walk which sadly is going to be the last walk of the season.
Overall, it was a great walk with great company that took us around 2.5 hours.
